Another 'blog' style
news segment: It is a busy time. In the next two weeks I resume the run
of Cosi fan Tutte in Hamburg followed swiftly by the
premiere of Ramin Gray's new production of Death in Venice with
Michael Schade as Aschenbach, then it's off to Holland for Die
Jahreszeiten with Bruno Weil and Berlin for Messiah with
Frieder Bernius with more DiV inbetween.
The NMC Songbook,
The Judgement of Paris and Messiah are all out now and
available to buy. Visions Fugitives (Les Illuminations live from
the Gergiev festival 2008) will follow any day.
The NMC Songbook is
choice for song and The Judgement of Paris is Opera Choice in BBC Music
Magazine May 2009. The NMC Songbook is also Gramophone's 'Recommendation
for May 2009'.
"Benjamin
Hulett (Paris) is delightful as the young
and naïve shepherd gawping in delight at a trio of goddesses yet humbled
by the difficulty of deciding who is the most beautiful. His light tone
is backed up with a wonderful presence that really draws in the
listener." Musicalcriticism.com
"Tarik
O'Regan's Darkness Visible is a highlight of the set; it is
haunting, attentively scored, and sensitively performed, with Watts,
Hulett and Wakeford each offering tiny inflections of expression at
various moments within the performance."

BEN TO SING MISSA SOLEMNIS IN
SALZBURG AND VIENNA .
I have the great
honour of 'jumping in' to replace the indisposed William Burden for two
concerts with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg under Ivor Bolton. First
on 5 February in Salzburg and then on 9 February in Vienna.

It seems timely to
write a little 'blog' about some forthcoming events and changes in my
life.
Firstly, at the end
of my fourth season as a principal at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, my
family and I will be returning to the UK. I continue to have a wonderful
time at Hamburg State Opera and am greatly looking forward to my house
debut as Ferrando and the premiere of Britten's Death in Venice
as well as returning as Tamino.
I am also looking
forward to making my concert debuts in Berlin, Moscow and Vienna as well
as further forays into recital repertory in Hamburg and at the Aldeburgh
Festival. I am also very excited about returning to Wigmore for a Gluck
programme for my old friends Bampton Classical Opera under Christian
Curnyn and my opera debut in Vienna.
2009 is also an
exciting time for recording projects and CD releases. Spring sees the
releases of Visions Fugitives (Les Illuminations
and Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, live from the 2008 Gergiev
Festival with Concerto Rotterdam) on Saphrane, Messiah
with Stuttgart Barock under Frieder Bernius on Carus, The
Judgement of Paris by Eccles (singing Paris) with early opera
company and Christian Curnyn on Chandos, The NMC Songbook;
a collection of commissioned pieces by NMC records, and Gouvy's
little-known Iphigenie en Tauride with Kantorei Saarlouis
on CPO. Further projects and releases include my debut recital
disc with Alexander Soddy, also on the new and exciting Dutch label
Saphrane.
